Solenoid for Outhaul Windlass for In-Mast Furling

I own a 68 cal cruising 46 that was gutted and completly renovated in 1982 which included elecrical power winch for the inmast furling. The solenoid I was told on sea trial needs to be tapped vigourously with the but of a screw driver which we did and got the outhaul button to work. The " inhaul" furling button works fine everytime. The outhaul rarely and for only a fraction of a second at best which necessitates manual release of the main sail.

Does anyone out there know anything about fixing this? Perhaps replacing the solenoid? What do I look for? How do I go about this. I contacted a local marine electronic shop. They don't replace solenoids. Would apreciate any advise

Do you have 1 single “reversing” solenoid, or 2 solenoids (1 “out”, & 1 “in”)?

A single reversing solenoid relay will have 4 “large” gauge (current carrying) wires, and 2 “small” gauge (switching) wires, something as indicated below.

I replaced the "outhaul" solenoid today with the help of BOAT MECHANIC, well the problem persists-the main sail wont roll out but at times it reels in. Now the mechanic thinks the Hood windlass is defective and wants to disassemble the boom from the mast and remove the windlass motor. is there a better way to do this. are there service manuals that shows how to do this? is this a common problem or am I the only one? what sort of maintenace work I should do to prevent this from recurring again?

when I was still working in the Fab shop we used a gear motor that had a breaking system, I have not seen a furler system yet that is motor driven would you please tell me more about it?

I would first do a OMH test and check the windings before i took anything apart.

This is a guess but I beleive you have a gear motor with some type of break system and the break could be the problem.
