Slipping Gypsy

We have an older version "Ideal" (model CHWSO) horizontal windlass. By the book it's designed for a 5/16" or 3/8" chain. When we got the boat we upgraded the chain from the 5/16" BBB to 3/8" HT....also put on a heavier anchor (from a 35 # CQR to a 60# Manson). The Manson's awesome but that's another story...problem is that now the chain is beginning to slip in the gypsy when it comes up. It doesn't always slip...but is getting worse. Short of replacing the chain (which I understand 3/8" HT is slightly larger and rounder than standard 3/8") or getting a new windlass....anyone have any thoughts or experiences with this? The manual does say 3/8" fits with this...and the links lay in well so the 3/8" standard size is not the issue. Real world testing though showed it doesn't work well with HT chain. Any way to stop the slipping?

If the chain is jumping from it's seated position as the gypsy turns and the problem is not that the gypsy itself is slipping (slipping gypsy?); then, I think the most economic solution would be to replace the gypsy instead of the chain or the windlass. The manufacturer should be able to supply an alternate gypsy that is made to accomodate your chain. Take care and joy, Aythya crew

Not specifically familiar with the construction of the Ideal windlass so the comments below are based on generic, horizontal windlass design.

I wasn't 100% clear on whether you meant the chain is slipping in the gypsy, that is the gypsy keeps turning but the links of chain jump out of the slot in the gypsy, sort of like cogs of a pair of gears jumping out OR is the gypsy and chain staying together, the motor is turning but the gypsy is not?

If the first then it is an issue of fit or wear with the chain and gypsy. If the later then it is an issue with the clutch.

If the gypsy is worn (but you say the chain lies in the gypsy snuggly) then replacing the gypsy may fix it.

Also, is it possible that with the new chain it is not laying well in the chain locker, piling up and not keeping enough weight on the chain to keep the links in place. Does the "slipping" get worse as the anchor is closer? That would indicate this could be the issue.

3/8 Ideal chwso gypsy is made for proof cool chain. HT and BBB links are smaller so they skip.

Your links of the "upgraded" chain do not fit your gypsy well enough to keep them from jumping. Ideal still makes or refits your windlass so I would contact them and pose the question. Describe exactly what chain you have and maybe they make a gypsy to fit.
