Slipping and Insurance - Perth, WA

Just went to make arrangements to slip my boat and have been told – NEW RULES; now I have to have insurance before slipping. Grr...

Applies to all the slipways around here so we now have to comply with a new government initiative, no insurance, no slip. While I can understand individual slipways wanting to do things their own way (ie insurance or no insurance), I can't understand why the G men should dictate policy to all.

One yard told me it is causing all sorts of problems for some older lower value boats to say nothing of the following scenario:
Yard – “no certificate, no slip”
Insurance Company - “no slip, no certificate”
Catch 22.
Gun'mit - “not our problem, mate”

Seems like some clown managed to burn his boat while on the hard last year and so now we have an insurance requirement for ALL. I am over this dumbing down to the lowest common idiot.

Luckily for moir, I had a survey last year which is still good and have been quoted $140 for 3rd party cover so dollars aren't the issue (yet) but soon I will have to have insurance for the dinghy trip out to the mooring.

Liability insurance has been a requirement for every marina I have used on the east coast for many years, sometimes even for transient use. I doubt that it is a "government regulation". It is the marina's insurance carrier finally catching up to mitigating their risk.

You are lucky to be able to buy liability insurance so cheap. It is usually about $500 per year.

Yes, it is usual for marina's around here although many don't bother checking for transient use, rather just take your money than worry about "detail" but slipways and maintenance hardstand areas have never seen the need for it. I haven't got to the bottom of it yet but various slips have said they were "forced" to introduce this year it after visits form local authorities.

Anyway I will get over it , pays me money and get on with life and yes lucky for now re price of premium!

As for "marina's insurance carrier finally catching up to mitigating their risk.", I guess I am more cynical; I reckon it is the same carriers getting many lots of premiums for the same risk. Hey I can the same premium from the marina as I always did and I can get an additional premium from the boat owners but my level of risk hasn't altered. i.e. no additional boats.

I'd love third party insurance but have no idea who might offer it.

I was wondering where Perth WA is ? Is that Washington state or a place in Australia ?
Anyway here on the west coast of the USA insurance is needed in any marina, even when we bought our boat the marina in San Diago's Mission bay needed my proof of insurance when I bought our boat and was only staying one week. You definately need insurance in WA state.

GIO (also known as SunCorp - I think), so far it seems all too easy and cheap, will advise if I run across any hidden problems .

30 years of boat owning (and 3 yachts) and I finally had to submit to the insurance game .

The state of Western Australia (WA), it does confuse our USA friends .

Everyone, I understand about marinas requiring insurance but do you guys require it to go up on a slipway or travel lift?
