Single seat ideas

Hi all,

I have an area of the boat in the main cabin that I’ve put aside for one or two single seats, armchairs if you like. The idea was inspired by a friend’s boat where they had converted an unneeded settee into a pair of comfy single chairs, separated by some drawers and a handy side table.

If any has a photo of a similar setup they can share I’d be grateful. It is not common and I am struggling to find examples in boat sales sites where the vast majority of boats have an obsession with cramming in as many sleeping positions as possible, not comfortable single seats.

With seven other sleeping positions on this boat, I am not worried about losing this one.

Matt

Re: Single seat ideas

Matt, the VdeS Samoa has that as their standard layout. A bit of googl-** should give some examples. Also we were recently on a Malo 49 that had such.

It does make a nice setup IMO, if you have t he room for it... and the chairs are comfortable.

Check out the Amel 54. They also used two armchairs instead of a settee. Very comfy.

Indeed, here they are.... very pretty, tho between you and me bill, I still prefer our loveseat and pull out berth above it on our 53s. More versatile I think

Re: Single seat ideas

Would a household recliner or barrel chair or some such work? We replaced a sleep sofa with two zero-clearance (sorta) recliners...

I had hoped so.

I tried with an IKEA Poang, just the seat frame, but I couldn’t quite make it work. I’ve reluctantly accepted that, like most things on a mid sized sailing boat, it will have to be a custom build.

I look at similar sized motor boats and realise how much simpler their shape makes fitting out.

Much more common on boats built in Scandinavia. Hallberg-Rassy had many with seats like you describe... so did Najad, Malo, Sweden Yachts, etc.

Some examples:

Re: Single seat ideas

I'd suggest you to consider a recliner here. I am sure a lane recliner will fully meet your needs. As with everything, it is best to buy high on the "food chain." We have had our Lane pieces for about 3 years. So far, so good.

On a 42 foot sailing boat? Are you serious?

Re: Single seat ideas

We don't have them, but many people seem to swear by their bean-bag chairs. You could build up a base to make it easier to get up from if it's too low down, or perhaps stack two of them.

Sounds fun, but in my case I ended up building something very similar to the Amel photo.
