Sikaflex 292 for Chain Plates

I am planning on using Sikaflex 292 to bed my external chain plates. The sikaflex marine instructions say that we should apply the sikaflex and only tighten far enough to establish the mechanical connection. 24 hours later you are supposed to tighten.

I am concerned that using this technique will break the sealant... for those of you that have used sikaflex for this... what is your opinion?

I've heard of this being done. The idea is that the sikaflex will set up to a point before you really tighten it down. Then when you do tighten it, it will actually form an adhered gasket. Many people have reported positive results.

Re: Sikaflex 292 for Chain Plates

If is external plates, dont worry to much, aply the sika and tight the bolts, internal plates is another history, in my boat as a example i need to rebed the chainplates slots with the rigging in tension, if not the plates distort the caulking and leak again, what i use now is butyl tape and so far is working well, no leaks, forget to wait 24 hours for the sika , at 24 hours the sika is dry bone, my opinion...
