I know, I'm waiting for the cloud zapper, I ordered from the back of the comic book.

I can fry in five minutes here, not five hours. I had a 7/8 frame, soft bimini before with 45 watt panels that served me well. I ordered two 120watt 12v and was shipped two 150w 24v so I had to beef things up a bit.

Yes, I understand sun angle and shadowing is an issue in the NORTHERN climes, well anywhere really, but hey I'm on a sailboat, with a limited foot print. The house has nothing above it but clouds. That's why I ordered the could zapper.... & something to do with muscles.

Mounted the solar panels on the weekend and the YOT is sail-able again so I'm considering the project complete and moving to the next.

with as much power as you've got there, you can afford a wee bit of shadow. I've got a pair of 130-watt panels in a similar setup (I call it my "solar bimini") and even at Latitude 38 the controller shuts the system down by noon this time of year because it hasn't got anything more to do with the energy. By the time summer rolls around, I'm more interested in the shade than the power because, after all, shade doesn't grow on trees.

The attached photo is not my arch, but it is one I will copy when the time comes. It is made of 3.5 inch schedule 40 aluminum tube. Light and strong. I would add a frame going forward that would hold two large solar panels, and also function as a bimini.

I called Svensens in Alameda CA the other day asking for a general quote for a radar arch on a 44 footer. They said $10K for the base model and $14K for one with all the bells and whistles (seats, davits, extend lifelines to gate with solid SS).

Friends just had one put on the back of their Hylas 46 in Road Town BVI. Cost them $5600 and included davits for their RIB.

Jessica Watson has one on her boat "Pink Lady" that has withstood multiple mid ocean rollovers. Though not particularly pretty it serves a number of functions and is obviously very tough. It apears to be made of tubing somewhere near 2"dia. She calls it her roll cage.

I've got our welded on. 1-1/4" GRS conduit. DIY.

Probably about $300.

Radar and solar panels are yet to go on.

Simple and now polished. Old pic, and since then, two solar panels mounted on top plus wind generator. Radar scanner is now half way up the mast which gives more distant radar horizon and keeps those radar beams out of the way. Arch is bolted to the deck on each of 4 legs and secured to pulpit rails providing rigid structure.
