Shortening a tilled but adding a pipe extension.

I am looking the shorten my tiller to make more room in the cockpit for passengers.

This will be fine in light winds but I would like more leverage in heavy winds.

So I was thinking there are 2 options to make the tiller longer in a hurry.
1. Have some kind to solid hinge and fold the tiller back to make it shorter.
Then fold it forward when you want to make it longer.
The video below shows one at the 1 min mark.

2. Have some kind of pipe extension that will go over the tiller making it longer.

What do you guys think?

Maybe something like one of these?

Those tillers are aimed at outboard motors. They rotate for the throttle and don't supply much in the way of leverage.

If you are going to make your own, the added pipe is simpler, if inelegant. The hinge, if you go that way, should have a locking pin, so the an off-center hard pull won't result in its folding.

I want to see a picture of what you come up with - I suspect that others have to same problem.

That one in the YouTube is really good looking, but I'd still add a pin.

I did not know there are already these kinds of tiller extensions.

They are most likely not strong enough for the added leverage I want but the basic design is what I am looking for.

I wonder if some kind of pole extender for tree trimming might work.

The pipe idea is what i use on my socket set when I need a little more leverage but as pointed out it will not look great.

Re: Shortening a tilled but adding a pipe extension.

many ocean tillers have a fitted extension- simply a pipe of proper dimensions that fits in to end with a quick pin attachment to keep in place. Most extend a 2 meter tiller to 4 meters and often have a dingy style hinged extension in addition to that.

Works very well and fits/is removed with simplicity.

I don't believe I would trust using a hinge. Maybe not the hinge itself but the lack of meat to affix it to. A lot of stress during heavy weather.
Also seems you would have a beast to hold onto when flipped back for light weather.

I think it can be done. Can you show us a photo of the current tiller?
