I'll measure it the next time I'm out there, but I think it is pretty marginal.

I'll have to rig up a jig to see if it can fit in there anyway.

Re: Seacock for cockpit drains?

I had a Cape Dory 25D that had the cockpit drains exit through thru-hulls under the water line. I never understood why they designed it like that, because the cockpit floor was at least a couple of feet above the water line.

It did have seacocks, though.

Re: Seacock for cockpit drains?

I for one can not believe placing a cockpit drain below the LWL.

I for one can not believe placing a seacock into a cockpit drain.

Either I can change this or will not buy that badly engineered vessel.

Close the seacock, rainwater will cause pressure in the hose, hose breaks or cockpit is full, water intake at companionway, you sink.

Leave it open, devil doesn't sleep, hoseclamp or hose break, you sink

Mine are solid glasfibre tubes, drain well above WL

A 1" hose as a cockpit drain? How many of those do you have?

Isn't it the standard that a full cockpit must empty within 30 seconds?

My Roberts 43ft has X4 cockpit drains 1 1/2 inch diameter. In addition I have one just above the cockpit seat to drain onto the deck.

Any thruhull below the waterline that you can't quickly close (without invasive or destructive methods) is dangerous by design. fiberglass tubes as drains (so long as they are always above the waterline) are great as long as you can guarranty that the structure will never flex. But most boats are not built with the abilty to drain their cockpits above the waterline as more important design element than a workable interior

Re: Seacock for cockpit drains?

Is your boat the same Spirit 28 designed by Van de Stadt? If so, what has happened to increase the displacement enough to submerge the cockpit drain outlets? In the drawing below, they are clearly above the waterline, which bisects the point where the rudder shaft meets the top of the rudder.

If your actual waterline is close to where designed, and someone just added bottom paint above it for their own reasons, regular hose, double clamps and routine inspection should be good.

If your actual waterline is as indicated by the bottom paint, seacocks or at least reinforced hose, double clamps and more rigorous inspection are in order.

No, it is the Finch Design

At any rate, the Finch design has about 700 lbs more displacement, and lacks the 'bustle' at the stern that allows the (supposed, apparent) placement of the de Stadt-design cockpit drain through-hulls to be above the waterline.

From the drawing of the Finch design, and your picture, your through-hulls appear to be right at or slightly below the waterline, to many people a less-than-ideal location.

From your other picture, it certainly seems that there is enough room between the cockpit drain and the waterline to remount the through-hulls above the waterline; in fact there are two half-shown on the stern now (by the way, what are their functions?).

Would seem that, from a seaworthiness standpoint, if practical, now would be a good time to block off the current locations and reposition them to a higher location. Or maybe, depending on their functions, the existing above-waterlines ones could be made multifuntional and if necessary larger?

Re: Seacock for cockpit drains?

drain it above waterline. use heavy duty rubber hose .. not the ribbed stuff. use bronze thru hulls not plastic. double clamped.
