Sacrificial Anode Question

Not sure this is best forum to ask this question, but: Splashed our Hunter 356 into Lake Michigan mid May and realized I forgot to change out Sacrificial Anode attached to our prop. Attached is a picture of the Anode taken in May. Does it look like it is 100% used up or does it have enough life left to make it through October in fresh water Lake Michigan? Thanks for helping me decide to hoist the boat out and replace or wait till autumn take out.

Re: Sacrificial Anode Question

Ok - no pix was attached. But if you don’t want to wait until the boat is hauled, it is very easy to replace in the water. If you aren’t up for that, any diver usually offers that service.

Re: Sacrificial Anode Question

I dive under my boat and replace it with just a mask. Much easier to do in warmer water

Why would you need a zinc in fresh water? Bob

That looks exactly like our MaxProp cone anodes. There is very little pitting visible so I would consider it 95% remaining. Used up will show the shafts of the bolts and deep craters. One way to check is weigh a new anode, then weigh a used anode. My understanding is that you want not less than 30% material remaining. Chances are the anode will be eaten away at the bolts and falling off before that time.

If the water is really too cold for checking it directly yourself then put a GoPro or other waterproof camera on the end of a long stick and video it.

If it looks like that after one season, I’d guess you are good for another three years.
