Rustproofing

We all have some electronics on our boat that aren't up to marine specs.

I'm thinking about TVs, cooling fan motors, microwaves, galley appliances, computers.

There are also a lot of tools, including expensive electric tools.

How can I safely keep these from rusting or corroding in the marine environment?

Re: Rustproofing

I’ve not had too much problem, perhaps less than one would think. Obviously keep stuff dry. I wipe saw blades with WD40 when used. Some things like vice grips get hard use and exposure to salt air. Again work in WD40 to free inevitable rust and keep moving.

I’m not an excessively careful guy.

Re: Rustproofing

Guess it all depends on how wet your boat is below. I just put my tools away in their locker. Far as fans and TVs etc there has been any problems. But if you have problems you need to bag them.

Re: Rustproofing

I put the tools away when done using them. No special treatment has been given other than the occasional light oiling that is a byproduct of using them.

Regarding the consumer appliances. IMHO you’d be hard pressed to purchase an appliance now that didn’t have at least a thin layer of conformal coating on the IC’s.

Re: Rustproofing

For my tools I have kept them in a plastic bshoe box type container with a paper towel in the bottom & on top of the tools. Every now & again I spray some WD40 on the towels. The tools have no corrosion after 7 years. Won't help with the electronics though.
