Rust under stanchion bases

Every couple of days rust stains appear on the deck, below stanchion bases

They are ease to remove. I a few seconds with oxalic, phosphoric or citric, they dissappear. However, in a few days they come again.

It is obvious under the base(between the deck and the stanchion base) there is corrosion.

Unmounting is not an easy option.

Two questions:

-Is there a way to block these stains without to dissamble the stanchions?

-If not, what is the best treatment, besides cleanning, polishing and passivating, not to repeat these situation?

Thanks in advance!!!!

Re: Rust under stanchion bases

You want to remove and fix properly. If there is corrosion under something may snap and you will end up overboard. BAD.

Yes, I know this does not respond to your question but it does address the issue behind the question.

Cheers,
b.

Cosmetic cleaning is not enough of a solution, in my opinion.

If you have the cup type base with a bolt through the base and the stanchion is seated in the cup then the problem is the cup is holding on to sea water and rusts out the bolt. The cure is to drill one or two small drain holes low down on side of the cups to let them dry out. If loose you need to loosen side screw pull out stanchion and replace bolts in each base too.

Re: Rust under stanchion bases

You are clearly getting water under the stanchion bases. It is likely penetrating to the core. At the very least, you need to remove your stanchions and check the condition of the core.

I can provide details and pictures, but for the record when we went to rebed our stanchions, we found that some has voids underneath, some had core material that had become good potting soil and some were fine. We eventually figured out that our toe rail bolts were having similar issues.
