Hi,
I hope this picture comes thru ok
we were doing some sanding were the rudder skeg meets the hull on our tartan 34c
found this crack and hole, some water weeping from it,
the hull is solid otherwise, no bubbles or anything.
should i worry about this?
how would i go about repairing it?
tnx Patrick

There is a Tartan group on Yahoo that has a goodly number of T-34C owners. You may want to join and post there.

Re: Rudder skeg to hull joint crack Tartan 34c
Because of the thinness of skegs many boats have the skeg added to hull after it is laid up rather than molded in. If that is the case, you might want to explore the crack at the skeg/hull position to see if it is just a gel coat crack or a sign of larger problems. It it is a crack in the hull/skeg junction epoxy additional layers of stitch mat.
The other crack and puka are probably inconsequential and could be filled or have one layer of cloth epoxied on.

Re: Rudder skeg to hull joint crack Tartan 34c
There's a good bit of info on common problems & the fixes there to, here --> Home - Tartan Owners Northeast
And check all the models, not just yours. Since many problems aren't boat or model specific.

Re: Rudder skeg to hull joint crack Tartan 34c
Patrick, the Tartan 34 group on yahoo is just about dead. There is a lot of great information in the archives but almost nobody responds to questions. Finally someone told me that everyone had gone over to Facebook. I looked/joined there but there are not many informative posts (and I hate Facebook) so I will try the Northeast Tartan group mentioned here. I am refitting a 34C and am looking forward to taking it cruising. Have you had your Tartan very long? ____Grant. Tartan 34C #311

FWIW there are plenty of threads here on CF about fixing, or rebuilding skegs. I just wrote a long article on it yesterday.

T-34 group may be dead. But the Tartan Owners Group on Yahoo is doing well. I get daily updates from it.
I have both added to the knowledge base of the group and learned good lessons from other users. It is not unusual to speak to someone who used to own a model and moved up to a newer or larger Tartan.

Maybe you want to open this up to investigate. Does not look 'regular wear and tear' to me.

Yes. Start digging. Good luck and safe sailing.
