Magus is a 41'
Island Trader built in
Taiwan in 1978. The
rudder has become stiff to starboard, and this is with everything disconnected from the quadrant. The
rudder rests on a shoe connected to the bottom of the
full keel, plus there is a hinge set halfway up, one to the rudder and the other to the
hull.
Diving down I found some red rubbery stuff between the hinges, but it looked deformed. I cut as much as I could away and it helped a little.
Does anyone know this system? Was there a bearing at the bottom in the shoe? Were there bushings in the hinges? Is there a bearing in the rudder post? What was the red rubbery stuff?
What holds the hinge and shoe to the
hull? They look like
bronze rivets??
