Roatan Finish Carpenter Referrel Needed

Hello CF,

I am 98% finished with a 5 year total refit of Solace including all 12v/24v/110v electrical, new engine/tranny,generator, plumbing, 23 bronze portals, hull and thru-hulls, rigging, etc and am now down to some interior teak work. I have struggled to find honest, reliable contractors in Florida (Port Canaveral area) and have an opportunity to sail her to Roatan where my friend has a dive business with a private dock and good security.

My question is do any of you have a recommendation for a skilled and reliable finish carpenter on the Bay Island? I have searched the internet but have come up empty.

Thanks for your time!!

Jeff

I don't have a specific recommendation for you, but if you talk to Mr. Sherman, who owns a boat building business in French Harbor, I'm sure he could recommend someone. He has lived and built boats in Roatan all his life.

Yes, that's the one - everyone addresses him as Mr. Sherman. He is one of the most generous and helpful (and knowledgeable) people I have ever met.

Met a fellow yesterday named Charly Hynds at the Roatan Yacht Club in French Harbor. He claims to do ship's carpentry and goes under the name "Charly Service", cell phone no. (504) 3291 5169. Perhaps others have experience with him.

You might also consider Frontierus up the Rio in Guatemala. I'm hearing that there is now some good talent in some of the yards there.

It sounds as though it is time to get some "sea time" under your belt.

Thanks!! I'll follow up on both of the leads tomorrow.

I want to stay in Roatan to take advantage of the free secure dock space in Parrot Tree that my friend has offered.

I have been told that there are exceptional cabinet makers/finish carpenters on Utila and Guanaja as well but have yet to been able to track anyone down.

Yes it is possible to get very good work done in Rio Dulce, it helps if you speak some spanish because as soon as you get a gringo involved, up goes the price

Think about bring things with you,

For example, at the moment there is a shortage of teak, and the teak here is probably very young compared to what you are used to.

I have not yet found a source of good thick matt formica here
