Right turn Clyde

We recently upgraded to a different boat, our 4th keelboat.

When motoring, it wants to turn right. Like a car out of alignment, if I let go of the wheel it will start turning in just a few seconds. Not the case when sailing.

Could this be due to prop being closer to the rudder,
or the fact that the shaft is pretty level and there is very little prop-walk,
or might something be bent?

Curious as to your thoughts.

Appreciate any troubleshooting or tips!

Re: Right turn Clyde

Our boat does the same thing, and the PO gave me a very logical explanation that I have since forgotten. But I’ve stopped worrying about it.

Hopefully someone more qualified than I will provide the explanation.

Right turn Clyde

My IP does the same, it has to do with the direction of prop rotation and no prop offset angle, if it spun the other direction, it would pull left.
It is from flow over the rudder and the water rotation “pushing” if you will the rudder, remember the water flow off of a prop is a corkscrew, not straight.
My boat manual recommends tightening down on the rudder friction if motoring for long periods.
I know, not an answer, but it does help.

Re: Right turn Clyde

My boat had a very bad pull when first purchased. Turned out to be an engine alignment issue. It surprised me with how much effect it had.
