Replacement Gudgeons in South Florida

believe it or not my allied seawind has been missing the uppermost gudgeon for about 5 years, Ive only owned it for 5 months and i ready to do something about it, ive looked online a few times for sources of replacement and dont come up with much, will i have to have it custom made? i am assuming it is bronze, correct? attached is a picture (ms paint, sorry), not sure of the exact dimensions at this time but that cylinder on the back is threaded and atleast 3/4", maybe 1", plenty beefy

so where in south florida, or online would you go for something like this, and how much should i expect it to cost to have one made?

Ben,

Some overall dimensions of the unit might be helpfull in estimating what the materials cost would be.

Also you might think of stainless as an alternative material as it is more readily available than bronze and can be machined just about in any machine shop without needing a casting being made.

Thanks for the quick reply rusty, here is a picture with some rough dimensions. if they seem out of line for an overbuilt 30'er let me know

only reason i asked about bronze is because that is what all the pintles and gudgeons are made of, would it be a problem to put a bronze pintle in a stainless gudgeon?

also would bronze be more expensive?

Have you given any thought to doing it yourself? There's a lot of sites on do it yourself castings.

Probably not the best idea. Galvanic corrosion would likely be an issue.

Bronze and stainless are pretty close on the galvanic scale, but my experience with stainless gudgeons is not good. Its a pretty high and repetitive stress area, and the stainless is subject to stress corrosion cracking.

My Westsail had welded Stainless steel gudgeons on both the hull and rudder with a bronze hinge pin. Did not have a problem with electorlysis in the 10 years I owned the boat. Doubt you'd have a problem with electrolysis especially if you put a zinc on the stainless part. Bronze would be better but it's gotten so so pricey compared to stainless.
