Removing 'Ghost' Paint from Gelcoat

I recently had my boat hauled out and, as she was being renamed, I asked the yard if the previous, painted name could be safely removed from the white gel coat. "No problem," I was told. Of course, that's not how it turned out. There remains a no-so-faint ghost of the previous name and logo that looks terrible (the new name was a decal and placed elsewhere). I was told that if he tries to buff it down further he would actually go all the way through the gel coat. Obviously, I'm ticked, but I'm over my outrage now and am just looking for a solution.

I've read about using oven cleaner potentially, but I'm frankly nervous about using something so caustic. I also thought about trying to find those tinted car waxes that they advertise to hide scratches, and perhaps that would help.

Any ideas would be most welcome - I've spent so much time and effort trying to bring my girl back from the brink, to have this obvious defect just irks me every time I walk down the dock.

Thanks in advance!

We removed some tape from the cabin sides only to find the white GRP under neath much whiter than the rest. Wax polishing with a white colour polish helped (but needs doing regularly) and with time its slowly fading to match the surounding area 2 years on.

Ignore it and go sailing
