Refrigeration problem

I have a Frigaboat system that I installed a year or so ago that worked fine until May, when it suddenly stopped cooling.

I am sure that the problem is a lack of coolant, but I am not sure whether the leak is at the connector from the compressor to the evaporator or somewhere else in the line. I don't want to pay for multiple service calls, so I am wondering if it makes sense to take out the evaporator (myself) and bring it for a recharge/leak check. If it's an unfixable leak, I can buy a new evaporator then and re-install it myself. I know I'll have to have someone out to dry the line, but that's one fewer service call than I would have had otherwise.

Also wondering if the compressors have a failsafe that keeps them from starting up if the evaporator is disconnected.

Any thoughts appreciated.
