Refitting a Compass 47

Everything is moving along just nicely. The mast is painted and we are beginning to reassemble everything. The step is mounted with UHMW/Lanocote/Tef-Gel and ready to go. Everything on the mast is being assembled with the UHMW and Tef-Gel. Here are a few pictures.

Other projects currently underway are the polishing of metal deck hardware, revarnishing some cabin sole sections, and gelcoating the lockers.
For the first time I used a gelcoat with wax opposed to using a patch booster. Everything went OK.

I am hoping to get the rest of the mast hardware installed tomorrow minus the halyard exit plates and sheaves. The guys sanding the mast sanded through the tracer lines, so running the halyard looks like it is going to be a pain.

I decided to shift gears today because the yard where the mast currently lives is closed on Sunday. So.....I finally decided to tackle the aft head/black hole of disgusting filth/storage hole. I pulled the head and went to town with bleach and soft scrub. It came out pretty nice for the first round of cleaning. I even sanded the wood and should be varnishing in a few days, as we are getting some rain. Here are the pictures. I also make a few trash runs threw out the old hot water heater and sanded the rest of the boats interior trim.

I did not take any before pictures, so I had to hit the archive.

Things are moving along. The mast is mostly put together. We just need to run the halyards and install the cover plates and sheaves. The wiring and lights are good to go (I just need a PL-259 for the antenna). I also need to put a "speed bend" in the Windex so it will clear the antenna .

As far as the aft head goes. The varnishing is done. I have five coats gloss and one coat mate.

I also finished varnishing the mystery trim. I cant wait to figure out where that goes. The mystery trim is what I call they many pieces of trim that were scattered around the boat when we bought it.

I am currently varnishing the aft head trim. I was excited that this is the last bit of varnishing (until a recoat is needed). Well that was until I delivered it to the back porch and realized how much there was. I just finished my second coat.

The first two pictures are of the mystery trim. The rest are of the aft head trim.

Tomorrow I will rebuild the furler and install a new forestay and splice the halyards and control lines.

I am also prepping the boat for bug bomb followed by a major, major cleaning. That will be Saturday. School starts Monday, so it is crunch time.

I'd say that if you are at the point of varnishing trim pieces, your boat refit project is definitely seeing daylight! Took me many years to get to the point where there weren't always more pressing priorities, and my boat was much further along than yours when I bought it. Now if I find myself starting to mess with the stereo system, then I'll KNOW I'm in good shape!

Thanks! It is funny that you mention stereo stuff. I was looking at speakers for the boat the other day and Denise was like "really how about a main sail." I guess i was getting ahead of myself lol.

Yeah, well, sometimes on these long-term, Herculean-type projects you gotta keep the motivation up. New speakers are cheaper & offer more immediate gratification than a new main sail! Good thing you have Denise helping to mind the store!

I know! I just cant stand looking at the empty holes in the headliner. Lol

That boat is a gem. She was designed by a friend of ours, and they sail really well.
If she was built in Cape Town, and the electricals were by Auto Marine Control, there is a good chance the wiring is all tinned copper, and that is huge.

Nice job all round.

What was the computer looking thing on the nav station with a monitor???
