Rebuilding Perkins 4.108

I will be rebuilding this engine over the winter. I have talked to two Perkins parts vendors: Foley in Massachusetts and Transatlantic Diesel (TAD) in Virginia. Have you had dealings with either one of these firms? Comments appreciated.

thanks, bill brown

Re: REBUILDING PERKINS 4.108

I would avoid Foley, never had dealings with TAD. I purchased all my Perkins parts for my rebuild from Kraft Power in NY.

Hi Bill

I have found TAD to be excellent. Sheri Moon is the person to contact.
They shipped me a complete rebuild kit for my 4-108 a few years back and my engine hasn't missed beat since! I have just ordered a new salt water pump and spare exhaust elbow. Great service and very prompt.

Bill,
Just rebuilt my 4.108 winter before last. It only had 3500 hours, and folks told me they go 35000 hours before really needing it, but it was a leaky, rusty mess which didn't inspire trust.
I bought a rebuilt block and head from Perkins Pacific in Vancouver, WA., and shipped the old one back for the core charge. If you deal with them, be sure to lock down the details of the price and what's included.
Then my mechanic friend transferred all the studs, etc from the old to the new. Also bought new heat exchanger and rebuilt the starter and injectors and injector pump, and bought a bigger alternator. The job came to twelve thousand. I probably would have been fine with new bearings and seals, but I wanted to be totally thorough.
An excellent, very experienced 4.108 expert is Mr. Stewart at Stewart Marine in Seattle, WA. He cautions that unless you send your injector pump to the place in Bellingham, WA, the engine won't want to run. Luckily, I did. They are a good source for parts, and may do a rebuild for you as well. Let me know if you need more details. I forgot where you are in the country.
Good Luck,
...Tom of Raven

Re: Rebuilding Perkins 4.108

Not sure if this is too late!

Perkins are British engines, so you may want to get parts from the source !!

I found a few good places out there and parts are simply half price from the best price you can get in the US or Canada.

Try asap-supplies dot com or parts4engines dot com

I bought a heat exchanger and hoses from asap and delivery was 75$ and 4-6 weeks. The delay is not the reseller but Perkins, would be the same in the US or Canada.

Since these comes from the UK, that's where you get the good deal.

Custom duties, taxes ?? They ship DHL and charge 2.5% of the value for brokering stuff (25$ on 1K, much better that UPS) and you may have to pay your local taxes, which you would pay anyway.

Worth looking out there!

Re: Rebuilding Perkins 4.108

Yes, unfortunately it was 12K, but everything is "new". Factory rebuilt block and heads, all new hoses, new heat exchanger, rebuilt injectors and pump, new flywheel, totally rebuilt starter, new alternator...
Like I said, if I had it to do over, I think I'd haul it inside the boat (which I did on my first Rawson), put in new seals and bearings, and call it good!
It's pretty, though. That inspires some confidence...
Heck, I should be sailing anyhow, not motoring!
