Hi..i am new to the sailing world(a few weekends on some Manitoba lakes) and have fallen in love...its been a long time dream to buy a boat and see the world....Well..here i am 45 years old..newly moved to the west coast..and considering a live aboard purchase rather than paying rent on a house..the boat that i am currently interested in is a 40 footer...it has no mast or rigging but other than that appears to be in wonderfull shape..so..my question is...how do i determin mast size, sail size, and is there an online place that i could purchase these types of things?? currently it is a motor sailor with no sail..lol...any help or guidance would sure be appreciated

Make and model of that 40-footer might be a good place to start. Go with the original designer's specs. They did the work for you, because they built the boat. Either contact them (if still in business), or search the specs for that specific model on-line.

If it has no mast or rigging, it probably has no sails, either. So be prepared to spend about $20k-$30k.

You have a bunch of choices. The original design would be the first choice for the mast and boom sizes. If you are a crafty person you could come up with spars that need to be shortened and set up to work on your boat. Bent masts that could be spliced etc. Where you are located is important. Hauling a mast for a 40' boat down the freeway on top of your car would be scary. Booms are a bit better and there are more of them for sale. In the end a rigger will probably save you money on the standing rigging using swaged fittings. They are much better at that kind of thing than you will be.

You might consider resubmitting your inquiry with a different subject line like: "Need specification for standing rig of 40' Fred Amor".

The people with the information you need may not even look at your post with its current heading.

IMHO re-inventing your rig without the help of a naval architect is a bad idea.

Is this the boat that you're looking at? For the amount of work that it will need, not sure that I'd be jumping quickly at $25,500 (OBO). Either way, good luck with the rebuild.
