Rebedding Deck Hardware

Hope this hasn't been covered 50 times before but... Sorry if so.


Surveyor tells buyer, "All deck hardware should be rebedded every 5 years."


Is this legit? I'd like a better understanding of the chemistry and logistics.

I’m not off shore (yet). and not a chemist. however, have had excellent results rebedding (when needed or when drilling new holes in your boat)...with butyl. Also, there’s kind of a common acceptability now regarding drilling holes and rebedding. Look up Mainsail. This guy has a webpage with pictures and the data you're after on how to properly do things...like rebedding.

Your surveyor perhaps might be referring to the use of other rebedding compounds, which over time crack and lose their effectiveness. Also, we’ve all seen shoddy bedding techniques. 5 years sounds extreme if the job is done properly.

It's a preventative measure type of thinking. Nothing wrong with that.
What's worse, rebedding or fixing wet core throughout the deck?
But 5 years is a bit short because deck hardware is a bitch to reseal.
Everything's a compromise. I vote 10 years. Or use 5200 and never do it again!

If it is done correctly, no. Correctly means that no water can get in the core even if the bedding leaks.

Common Practice with custom builds
Two step

Hardware bedded into thickened epoxy ... hardware surface protected from bonding with a break film

Hardware removed.. bed cleaned up , painted or whatever

Once substrate is perfectly true .. the epoxy bedding ... the hardware is mounted into siks flex
