Re-Painting a Windlass

Hi all,

My Maxwell windlass is losing its powder-coat in big flakes. It appears to be aluminum underneath. Is there anything special that I need to do to re-paint it, besides prep and cleaning? Any recommended paints or epoxies?

sand blast 2 part zinc chromate primer follow with topcoat...

Why not bare aluminum! Otherwise acid wash and zinc chromate primer. Be careful though, not all ZC primers are compatible with certain overcoats! Don't ask how I know but a custom windlass support of mine seemed to stay rubbery and tacky for years!

I prepped mine with automotive spray can primer, and top coated with Outboard motor spray enamel. 4 yrs and still looks good.
