Raw Water Intake Strainer Mounting Location?

am i correct in assuming that i want to mount my internal strainer for the engine raw water intake so that the top is just above the waterline? (that way i can open it to empty the basket w/o flooding the boat haha), please confirm?

Many strainers require you to mount the top above water line--read the instructions.

Ditto.... mine is mounted near the top of the engine, above the water line ....easily accessible.
You want to mounted it where you can/will check it.

Ahhh why not just close the seacock while cleaning it

Then you open the seacock just a bit to purge it before closing the top.

That works well if the stainer manufacturer allows below the waterline mounting. Many don't.

Not so! All of mine are below the waterline. Strainers have a pressure rating (plastic vs bronze) and do need to be serviced occasionally!

It's the above water rating that counts. If they leak air the pumps lose suction.

Ziggy's post says many not all....nothing really misleading there.

Casey's article appears to indicate his preference for an above the waterline screen, as long has it is designed for that purpose... I can open mine without closing the seacock...and it's easily accessible...also a key point made by casey...
