That sounds like a reference to the space underneath the middle of a catamaran... a low bridge-deck may give more interior space but will have more waves hitting it from below.

(Plain old bridge clearance or "air draft" would of course be the distance from the waterline to the masthead/stuff on top of mast.)

I think it refers to the clearance above the water of the deck of a cat.
