Prout Quest 31' Steering

I have a 1978 Prout Quest 31'. Shortly after the first of the year I will be going on the hard to re-build rudders and do a bottom job on her. I am thinking that this is the time to convert to wheel steering like the later models were. Information and documentation is very hard to come by and the Prout Owners site is not very active.
I am considering using hydraulics with short stubs coming out of rudders where tillers now leave and a tie-bar between them. I have also considered a duo cable steering with cable exiting the hulls, similar to old style I/O set up.
There are plenty of photos of steering stations on the Prouts , but I have been unable to find any information, picture , or even seen the actual mechanical set up and workings. If there is anyone who has any info on this I would greatly welcome it. I would like to clear the back deck of the big sweeping tillers.
I am open to all suggestions

Tybee - I have a 74 34/35 Snowgoose with wheel steering. The rudders are tied together with 2 rods to a central steering box inside the aft crossbar. Then by shafts to another box under the helm and a third behind the wheel.
Works well but a fair bit of drag throughout the system. I probably have pictures of most of this if you want to pm me.

Tybee - did you buy this about 4-5 years ago and had a green fabric bimini on it? If so, I looked seriously at buying that boat back then.

Re: Prout Quest 31' Steering

Hello,
we had a P. Quest 31 while back and from what I remember a tie bar was located in a column aft of the boat. A hole with inspection plate on the side of one hull allowed this bar/rod to be slid in and out. Little tiller arms came out of the rudders into aft of aft cabins where it attached to tyre rod ends. These rod ends were screwed onto the tie bar at each end.
In the centre of the tie bar there was a hydraulic ram (accessed via a central inspection hatch on the column aft of the aft deck). The hydraulic lines from ram went to the steering hydraulic pump. My boat had all the drawings with it and the system was simple and effective.
I will look on the net to see if there are some drawings somewhere.
You could use rope/pulley system instead of hydraulics though.

Regards, Satish
