Beiser's book is FAR from out of date. A novice who reads it, and comprehends what Beiser had to say, might very well, in drawing up design desiderata for a new-built cruising yacht, evolve something that, in the flesh, would be very much like - oh, let us say - something like a Mauritius 43 :-)

He might also come up with something like a Vancouver 27, all depending on location, aspirations and budget.

I think the Cherubini 44 is not only nice to look at, (easy on the eyes,) but is a practical boat.
That said, I do think that if I was shopping for a boat that was large enough that a divided rig made sense for 2>3 people to easily handle I'd want a staysail schooner, (no gaffs, all sails 3-sided,) well, except for a giant "Gollywobbler".
The big sail/mast being aft makes it a lot easier to work/handle/reef, and the sail combinations are almost endless.
