Re: Prop coating. DON'T DO THIS!!

I had pretty good records of my boats performance both with and without prop speed. My boat was a little over propped and the engine wouldn’t hit the speed limiter by about 100 rpm. With prop speed it gained those missing rpm and the boat went about a knot faster at top speed.

Nope, never been told that by commercial fisherman but have observed the lack of propspeed on their props when we are on the hard.

But I was told guy a guy who owns a marine engineering business (props and shafts) on mainly superyacht and commercual vessels who also do propspeed.

And also by marine electrical/corrosion specialist who also does a lot of propspeed on other vessels

They said it would have negligible advantage on a slow spinning prop and, as the vessel is moved several times a week i may as well stay with antifoul like the majority of the slow spinning prop crowd do and save the $$$

Hard bottom paint holds up fine even on my faster turning props (500 rpm at slow cruise, about 1300 at fast cruise).

Update

Did a quick haul to touch up the bottom paint and do the prop.

Going with prop speed which I last used many years ago. Application was slightly detailed but not terribly so. Tried to follow the directions very closely as from all reports, do it wrong and the stuff comes off.

After sanding and cleaning the props the whole process took less than an hour. Will report back later on how well it works and holds up.

Re: Prop coating. DON'T DO THIS!!

I have a related question.
I just used Pettit Prop coat on my boat's propeller. I used the paint on version.

Pettit recommends their 120 thinner for brush cleaning. Does anyone know whether a different (less expensive) solvent might also work? Pettit 120 Brushing Thinner goes for >$40 a quart!

Thanks!

Re: Prop coating. DON'T DO THIS!!

For brush cleaning the exact thinner is unlikely to matter. If you've got something else on hand, try it and see what happens.

Probably that expensive because it's highly refined and high purity to use as thinner for expensive paint.

For brush cleaning, gross overkill.

Look at the SDS and you can see the actual ingredients and use something equivalent. Basically it shows 50-80% is a mix of light and heavy naphtha solvent, 20% Stoddard Solvent and the balance a bit of this and that.

BUT, I just used a reasonable quality but disposable brush assuming it would never be quite the same when done.
