Repainting top sides was one of the few jobs that the yard I worked at begged owners to prep before the
boat even came to us. The base prep can be incredibly time consuming, and frankly paying yard guys $50/hr to do it is silly. Removing all the
deck hardware for instance is incredibly time consuming, even worse so in the yard than in the slip. Because we would first make a template of where every piece of
deck hardware was, number each and every piece, then remove everything, bag it and store it seperatly. This adds up to a lot of man hours just so we knew how to put it all back the way it came, not to mention the hours of time moving around the deck, dealing with stuck nuts, getting the grinder, removing old
sealant.
Add it all up and just removing deck hardware often times is the most expensive part of a
paint job. If you do it right and make sure all the deck hardware has had nearby
core properly sealed as well and it can really add up quick. But all of this is stuff anyone who has a friend a case of
beer and a weekend can get done.
Even if you stop at this point you will have saved a lot of
money. But if you keep going and do some of the filling and fairing as well you can save even more. This however does take a little bit more skill, and while an owner may want to do the big stuff it may not be a bad idea to let the yard to the finish
work.
