Pre-Primed Steel in Australia ?

Hi,

I have a section of hull in my steel yacht that needs replacing, and I'm looking to use pre-primed steel for the job. Does anyone know a supplier especially near Sydney?

Sticky, one of the steel fabricators used to do primed plate to order, Giovencos I think, but if its a small Quantity probably not ecenomic, your best bet may be to get the black plate & get a blasting firm to blow over it- there was one or two at Shell point slips in Taren point. Make sure the primer is a geniune " weld through" & part of a compatible system for your coating system for the repair & also not applied in too heavy a fashion as this can affect the welding ease particularily with mig or grind off in way of weld zone(recomended anyway). You are going to have to grind away the primer so as to cut it with either Plasma or Gas. You have to also grind to Weld. So you are going to have to sandblast the area of repair anyway.
The primer may not be of the type that suits your paint system. It will most likely be single pot and will be an issue if you are going for two pot paints. So it may well be just as easy to ordr plain and then prepare and paint the repair area properly after the repair.
