porthole gasket replacement procedure

Have Man Ship S.S. portholes. Purchased 19 ft of new gasket material. The old gasket comes out very easy. just a small amount of old silicone present.

I understand the need to clean the channel. Also for the end pieces of gasket to be on top of the porthole. Some sources mention adding new silicone. Another site adds a small amount of some super glue like glue. I’ve already rebedded the portholes, could use a little advice regarding gasket replacement.

Thanks!

I've used contact cement. The silicone is very slippery when wet and trying to put pressure on while it dries makes it slide a bit sometimes.
Test one portlite first with your new material, some are just too hard or big to close well.
Also, most rubber materials you can glue the cut end together just like a continuous piece. Use CA glue for that. (super glue) We used to do that with orings in industrial use and pressurized them to 5000psi!

Re: porthole gasket replacement procedure

I'm in complete agreement with Cheechako, so this is just add-on details. Super glue will join the ends of the new gasket, but that's its only use here. Once made up, contact cement or rubber cement (just about the same stuff) is ideal to mount the new gasket. Put it on both the frame and the gasket in a thin coat, let dry for a minute or two, and (tricky part) place the gasket into the grove in the right place. "Contact" in this case means "You ain't moving it" once the surfaces make contact.

One way to get the gasket into place is to hold it away from the groove, and then touch it into the groove at only one place. Then tap it into the groove in both directions. Avoid stretching it or you'll end up with a buckle at the far side.

If you are installing a gasket that has a shape of its own, mark the gasket and the frame at several points that should align before you apply the glue, and then match it up as you poke the gasket into the groove.

Thank You!

There’s an extensive source for gasket material at Wefco Rubber Manufacturing Co., Inc. - Industrial, Marine, and Automotive Rubber Products

I ended up ordering from https://www.marinedepotdirect.com/

Thanks again, will try the contact cement

Re: porthole gasket replacement procedure:

Cut gasket material to proper length with ends 45 degrees. Glue ends, let dry. Place thin coat of glue in gasket channel, place prepared gasket with joint above in groove and slowly close portlite keeping gasket in channel. Toggle down slightly to hold it, then use use fingers inside and out to center gasket in channel. Leave over nite; worked well for me!

McMaster Carr online is great source for all types, sizes and shapers of rubber products. It is where I got my port light gaskets.

I use 3M weatherstripping and gasket adhesive, black. I is basically contact cement but meant for rubber gaskets. Works well and easy to apply.
