I wanted to share this story just in case anyone else every encounters a similar situation. I have a
Perkins 4-154, but it might happen to any number of other motors.
I had run the
motor for most of the day.... And the
engine bed below it had become a pool of
oil. I
lost over a gallon. I feared the worst. Maybe a blown rear seal? But I couldn't see any active dripping there, or anywhere really. Didn't see any
oil hoses worn through or cracked.
So i pumped all the escaped oil into empty containers (using my spare
fuel squeeze bulb and some spare
fuel line to make a hand pump). I cleaned the
engine bed thoroughly with paper towels. I lay down new white oil absorbent mats covering the whole surface. Then I ran the engine for five minutes. Saw an oil stain, traced it up, and bingo!
The temperature
sensor, which threads into the oil pan, had rattled itself loose. Not all the way out, luckily. I tightened it up good, refilled with oil, and ran all the next day with nary a drop. Such a tiny thing can cause major headaches.
Just something to keep an eye on!
