Painting and varnishing techniques--what is new in recent years?

I am a boat owner again after 10 years ashore. Surely, there are new techniques and products! For example, I have discovered that butyl is a good substitute for caulk. I have an old fiberglass boat that needs repainting and the woodwork needs to be redone. What are the new techniques and products that have been developed in recent years?
Thank you!
