Oven next to fridge?
Hey everyone. I've been looking for inspiration for a galley redesign, and I've noticed that in a lot of ships, the fridge is right up next to the oven. This seems like a bad idea... am I overthinking it, and the radiated heat from an oven won't really affect the fridge, or is it just an issue of not enough space for everything?

Re: Oven next to fridge?
It’s a space thing.
The radiated heat causes our fridge to run longer.

Re: Oven next to fridge?
I'd suggest it's both a "space thing" & a design compromise.
That is, you want the typical work triangle of sink / fridge / oven so that you can work in the galley (reach everything) without having to move around too much.
Just a thought...

Re: Oven next to fridge?
Putting the oven next to the refrigerator is not a good idea if it can be avoided.

Re: Oven next to fridge?
In our boat:
- the oven is insulated,
- then there is a vertical 1/2 air gap,
- then there is a SS plate,
- then there is a 1/2 plywood wall,
- then there are 4 inches of insulation foam,
- then there is the fridge.
I can feel the wall on the opposite side, where there is the sink. To the touch, there is no change when the oven is working (say 1 hour every x day).
I bet the vertical air gap does a great job. Warm air lifts, cooler air flows in from below.
Imho there is next to nill heat transfer between the two. And if there is any, then only when the oven is in action (1 hour every x day, maybe 1 hour / 24 hours in the winter).
Cheers,
b.

Good description.
If you can put your hand on tyhe outside of your stove, and you certainly should be able to do so, then it's no different than running your fridge in a hot climate.

Re: Oven next to fridge?
probably contributes to why 3 sided designs are popular
they offer more flexibility, more choices

Re: Oven next to fridge?
As long as you have 8" of closed cell construction foam (R-40) between them, everything will be fine. I would keep them on the same side of the boat as far away from each other as possible. Just saying. Rule to follow, The greater the temperature difference between objects, the greater the speed of heat transferring from hot object to cold object.

I'd guess how often do you use the over?

Re: Oven next to fridge?
Yes, it is a problem... we had the issue and it was amazing how the radiation worked its way into the box in spite of 6'' of fair insulation. After I put a sheet of stainless between the fridge and stove the problem simply disappeared.
Initially, I had intended the plate to assist cleaning but the reduction of heat into the box was amazing.
I suspect some of the longer wavelength radiation goes straight through the insulation. ???

Re: Oven next to fridge?
The question is, do you heat the fridge (by putting the oven next to it) or do you flood the sink on one tack (by putting IT next to the hull & fridge instead) or...You are right about the conflicts, the only question is which compromise you personally prefer.

Re: Oven next to fridge?
I found fridge opposite side from oven, sink and counter makes a lot more sense. Most of the time I need only open the fridge once to remove ingredients and a second time to return unused portions.

Refrigerator low. Oven/heat high. Just my 2 centavos.

Re: Oven next to fridge?
Lots to think about here, especially the remark about the three sided galley design. Perhaps its worth experimenting with in the 3d modeler to see if it's something I can pull off. Since my boat is hull #1, it seems like there are a lot of... poorly optimized design choices.

It sounds like you are asking if I'd rather have cold beer, or the ability to do dishes
