Opinion on different anti fouls

A quick question for all my boating friends out there any opinions on Jotun (SeaGuardian) anti-foul paint compared to Altex No5. I have had two quotes both nearly identical in price but using two different products. I currently have Altex No 5 on my yacht. Cheers

Re: Opinion on different anti fouls

Sadly, I believe that in the case of anti fouling such anecdotal review is essentially worthless. Differences in preparation, application and maintenance easily outweigh small differences in paint efficacy... and the location of the boat's mooring is crucial. Even within a smallish body of water such as Lake Mac, some locations have different fouling species that are of concern and will offer differing experiences.

It's a bugger! FWIW, we used Sea Guardian a couple of times when we first owned this boat because that's what was on it when purchased. Had pretty ordinary results, with fouling beginning to appear within one year. Changed to the Altex 5 (or its clones) with maybe better results, maybe not... but our cruising grounds change, so who knows? We've managed 18 month life by slipping and water blasting (gently) after a year.

We don't routinely scrub the bottom when in colder water, and it is quite possible that we could extend paint life by doing so. This past August we had a pro do the bottom for us for the first time ever. It was applied by airless spray, and he got 18 liters (Altex) on where I usually only get 11-12 rolling two full coats with extra in the high wear areas. I'm hoping to get two full years out of this, with a scrub or spray in mid term... perhaps fantasy land! Will see how it plays out...

So, no help for you with my anecdotes... just talking story like yotties do. Good luck with your painting!

Jim
