Ok, I did it - House Paint!

i could not find the color for my hatch in marine paint so i bought interior/exterior high glass paint and had it tinted !!! my color !! - so- how long will that last ? and can i paint something marine OVER it ??? i also have many other brown things on my boat to match that are mostly metal - any ideas on what to do with those - i want them the same color Thanks to the wonderful people who share their expertise in this forum - unbeleivable resource you provide !!! the lady at Lowes was looking something up for me and i asked her what she was looking at and she said 'cruisersforum' !

- what surface did you paint (fiberglass, wood, metal, fero, etc).
- was it a one part or two part paint

I've used regular one-part white outdoor paint on some wooden stuff before when I just wanted to seal it from moisture and I knew I'd come back to it in a couple of years. Worked well enough, but you're not going to get 10 years out of it.

Dunno if you can get it in the States but in the UK I used a product called Japlac... great results but it only comes in basic colours.

If it is going to be exposed to direct sunlight then there might be a problem with the different expansion rates between latex and oil based paint. Given that, I would stick with oil based paint since in general it holds up longer.

I used to be embarassed to admit this, but I used Sears deck and pool nonskid paint on the deck of my steel boat. It had chunks of latex rubber in it, and it took 3 coats (just like the label said) to make it look even. It was an ugly grey, so I put Sears light blue deck paint over it. I taped off the deck to look like the fiberglass boat that was next to me in the boatyard, and it turned out looking very good. 2 years later, most of the boat looked like a rust bucket, but the decks still looked good. It was also real good nonskid, and didnt tear up foulies like sand or walnut shells do. Latex on a boat sounds like blasphemy , but it worked. You never know?????? ___Grant.

I used house paint on an old Volvo diesel....looked terrible...years later....still looked terrible.

A lot of the wharram builders use house paints with various results. Porch paint is and old favourite.

I have had good luck with Benjamin Moore M22, whih is a one part polyurethane similar to Interlux Brightsides, but about 1/4 of the cost. I painted our deck with it last spring and after one full season, it looks like new. We have walked all over it, dropped stuff on it, scrubbed it and with a bunch of kids around have generally abused it. You can have it tinnted any color you want, and it goes on easily.

Lets see I painted my cap rails with latex house paint last year. I also painted the insignia clothe I was using for uv protection on my furling jib. That's holding up ok too.

Just painted most of the other exterior wood with latex house paint last month.

But I'm blonde and can get away with it.

Plus a gallon O paint is about the same price as a pint of varnish... and lasts great gobs longer....

So glad you admitted this! Because I was totally going to do it but wasn't going to fess up. So does any paint actually stick to yellowed interior gelcoat? NOT that I'd ever do it or anything....

DC71. a good scrubbing to remove oils, dirt, grime and all the ancient crud, wiping down and a through sanding to remove the gloss (or where the gloss was), followed by a good primer and then your choice of compatible paint with your desired color will work. It is fairly labor intensive, but well worth the time and effort. Beware of the fumes when painting and let the boat air out for a week or so after and when done the insides will be like new....

We used white latex paint to repaint the interior of all the lockers, and the overhead on Insatiable (the first). Never had a problem with it, and made the interior of the boat much lighter. Have never tried it abovedecks.

When we had the topsides repainted, we had them use automotive LPU, and so far, it's still quite shiny.
