Re: oil

G’day and welcome to the forum.
That engine is probably a Perkins Perama MC42 so yes, the oil you mentioned should be ok for it. Give er an oil change every 100-150 hrs. If it’s still original and unopened, at 4,200 hrs you’re probably getting a bit of cylinder blowby so I’d keep to the lower hrs especially if you work it hard at full power.I assume this is a UK boat so if you need spares for this engine, “Parts4engines” is a good source in the UK

Re: oil

Thank you for swift reply, the engine is what you have said MC42 perma, what do you mean blowby, I had the boat inspected even the engine and was told that the previous owner had looked after it above and beyond ( could eat it dinner off it) and the engine is very responsive

I/we (wife) only tick over the engine when moving to be honest

sorry for the question

Re: oil

Greetings, and welcome aboard the CF, Bullet.

You can take Pete's advice to the bank.

The 4.2 MC is an older diesel engine.
For older Tier 3 [& below] engines, Perkins Engines recommends Perkins Diesel Engine Oil 15W-40 API CI-4.
15W-40 API CI-4 is a heavy-duty diesel engine oil, designed for high-speed four-stroke diesel engines, providing protection against wear, soot, and deposit formation.
The "15W" indicates its cold-weather viscosity, for easier starting.
The "40" indicates its high-temperature viscosity.
"API CI-4" is the American Petroleum Institute classification, that confirms its performance level in fuels with higher sulfur content, up to 0.5% weight.
The “C" generally refers to diesel engines.
“Ci” is Carbon Iodide.

“Perkins Diesel Engine Oil (DEO): SAE 15W-40 API CI-4"

It's when the seal between pistons and block allows some pressure from the combustion chamber to force its way past and into the crankcase.

I think skipperpete was suggesting that your oil may get degraded a bit faster than normal due to the engine hours and the assumption that normal wear has increased the amount of blowby, so change the oil a bit more frequently.

Arrr misunderstanding the engine has been serviced by the previous owner at what you have all said 100 to 150 hours I was just checking this was correct
