Re: Not Another Electronic Antifouling Thread !

The marina itself may have some restriction regarding in-water hull cleaning, but I guarantee the EPA does not restrict in-water hull cleaning in Florida or anywhere else.

All this leads me to wonder- how long have you been a boat owner? And are you being compensated by Barnacle Zapper for the promotion you are doing for them here?

It is called the EPA Clean boating act.Separate from that is EPA boat cleaning sec.4.13 .It even mentions the long lasting10 year bottom paint.

Re: Not Another Electronic Antifouling Thread !

Care to elaborate? I sure would like to find bottom paint that lasts 10 years!

The link below is to the EPA document that refers to 10 year bottom paint, hull cleaning etc. it is like the bible, many different interpretations. There seem to be very few restrictions on boat owners, however more on professionals.

http://www.epa.gov/owow/NPS/mmsp/section4.13.pdf

Re: Not Another Electronic Antifouling Thread !

I just read it and no mention of what manufacturer has a 10 year bottom paint.

He's talking about a category of anti fouling coatings that have been discussed ad nauseum here and elsewhere. They are not technically "paint" but are rather copper-loaded epoxies. They all tend to claim a 10-year lifespan. The flavor of the month is Coppercoat.

We don't see these products very often in the Bay Area because they have not proven effective here.

Whether or not gelana was referring to the Clean Boating Act, that piece of legislation does not restrict in-water hull cleaning for pleasure craft:

In-the-water hull cleaning performed by divers should also be done in a manner that does not remove paint from the hull.

Legislation like this is of concern. It is easy to shift from a liberal interpretation to a stricter, more literal view.

Re: Not Another Electronic Antifouling Thread !

It could very well have been the same document as the one you are men tioning. Its more than one marine that doesnt allow it. I keep the boat in the keys and others point to the same rrasons. Btw I have 42 years on the water. Everything from rebuilding engines to spraying awlcraft.

Thanks Gord. I am glad its not law, it would be impossible to conform to strict interpretation.
