Re: NON SLIP TO HOT

Pete,
Yes, we are still reminded of the intruder years later w/hints of white still in the grain of the cockpit grating.

Used to have light grey non-skid which would get uncomfortably hot.

Re: NON SLIP TO HOT

Wearing shoes would be cheaper than repainting the deck. Might help prevent stubbed toes too.

Just do it over again with a lighter color, white, and what’s white like to keep clean, suggestions appreciated
We went through the same experience a few years ago, also in Durban. We used Interdeck's "Dove Grey" if I remember correctly and on a hot day it would burn our feet.

After lots of advice and research we eventually settled on one part medium grey to 10 parts white. It is easier on the eyes (not so much glare) and doesn't burn your feet. We used this on 2 boats and it has been very successful. On a very bright day it's still a little glary, but we find the compromise quite acceptable.

Good luck with your decision

Re: NON SLIP TO HOT

I used Awlgrip with their texture particles, a fine/medium mix of 50/50, and some flattener. The slick part of the deck is oyster white. Aesthetically I would have gone with light grey, and also to hide dirt but chose another off white out if concerns about heat. I’m happy with it.

Whatever you choose I suggest you do some tests to get a texture you’re happy with. My criteria were effectiveness as nonskid, kind to my knees, and ease of cleaning. You need to find the right compromise.

Re: NON SLIP TO HOT

I am surprised that blue seems to have gone out of style for decks. My first cruising boat had light grey decks and they were very hot. The next boat I painted with Sears Deck and Patio Paint, in the same pattern as the boat next to me in the boatyard. It was very good nonskid and the blue was easy on the feet and on the eyes (glare). It also held up real well and because the nonskid was chunks of latex, it didnt eat thru weather gear">foul weather gear. Next boat was a standard fiberglass nonskid in beige which was hotter than the blue and was not very good nonskid. I am going to try Kiwigrip this time, but it will be in a light blue. Bright white is brutal on the eyes in the tropics. Just another opinion. Grant.
