Need product recommendation to remove exhaust soot off painted hull
We painted our boat 2 years ago white.
We have very dirty diesel fuel.
Our raw water exhaust is 1/2 way forward on the side of our boat.
The 1/2 of the boat behind it is now covered in not so nice exhaust soot grayish doesnt-wipe-off-with-a-rag stuff.
Any tips to clean it up without killing paint job?
PS. We are fixing fuel issue next month during our haulout.

Can't help you. I did find a link that looks interesting,
How to remove exhaust stain

Re: Need product recommendation to remove exhaust soot off painted hull
I've had luck with Spray 9 degreaser and LOTS of elbow grease. It will require a few passes to get it off.
Also, in my experience, if you're getting a lot of diesel soot on your transom that usually has more to do with the motor than the fuel. The soot is partially burned fuel.
We get some soot if I really push our motor hard for a long time - especially with a following breeze blowing it back against the transom.

Autosol works very well, as would any gentle rubbing compound. In the Car Care shelf

Re: Need product recommendation to remove exhaust soot off painted hull
Two products we’ve tried that work quick and easy every time:
- Mary Kates On & Off
- Boat Goat Scrub
Wet surface. Apply product. Wait a minute or two. Rinse. Light scrubbing with a soft brush, sponge, swab, or rag sometimes required.

All good suggestions here Wax the hull well after you clean it. It will make future cleanings a lot easier. I like pure carnuba wax applied with a lamb's wool on a polisher but Collinite works well also.

I've fastened a short plastic tube to the engine-exhaust port. One to two inches or so. Creates a bit of a chimney and helps prevent soot stains.

Re: Need product recommendation to remove exhaust soot off painted hull
Tilex Mold and Mildew Remover works like magic for removing exhaust stains on a painted hull. We used it all the time until we dialed in the engine and eliminated the exhaust smoke. Spray it on, wipe gently with a severely worn out green scrub pad, or something that won't scratch the paint. Then rinse with fresh water.
After it's clean, polish with SeaPower boat cleaner and wax.
Our Westerbeke 46 was smoking because the air intake was too small. Once we opened that up, no more smoke.
Tilex also works on removing stains from Formica or gelcoat in the galley. But be careful when you spray it. It will bleach clothing and dish towels.

Re: Need product recommendation to remove exhaust soot off painted hull
I tried Ajax, Bar Keepers Friend, Clorox, Booyah,...nothing but elbow grease until I tried Mary Kate's On and Off.
I have an aluminum hull in the water, but it's painted, and the white boot stripe is painted over that. So I felt a bit safer using this...must be an acid like hydrochloric or muriatic.
I put some On and Off in the Booyah empty spray bottle (be careful to wear eye protection) and gave it a test.
OMG, started working immediately on the boot stripe slime and the discoloration. Don't know about the black soot, but I'd say it's likely.
