Need ideas/products for swing arm/mount for electronic display
I am very limited as to mounting electronic displays/devices at the helm or elsewhere in the cockpit. I am putting a radar/chartplotter under the dodger but no room there for anything else.
Anyone have, or have seen, a swing arm or track mount that could be used to position a display at the companionway to see and use in the cockpit that could be retracted or swung away back in to the interior when not needed?
My previous boat had a dual track for the old radar but it wasn't the best setup. A swing arm would be great, especially if the display could be tilted so it is easy to use down below as well.
Whatever it is has to be secure and lock both in the retracted and the cockpit position and handle rough conditions. The display would be fairly light unlike my old CRT radar back in the day.
Thanks!

Re: Need ideas/products for swing arm/mount for electronic display
a lot of people have made them. Maybe search under Gimbal Mount or something like that.
I have one and am nearby, not sure if it's big enough or not. Both ends swivel 360. Powdercoated aluminum. The big pad is probably about 6-7 " long.

Please post some images of the areas considered for this equipment.

That looks like a Ram-Mount product. I had actually forgot about those. I am researching what they have. I think they have various mounting plates for where the display would go. That would be the easy part.
Most important it has to stay in place when tightened up and some don't do that. But Ram-Mount has some pretty herky mounts so I will look there. The bigger the ball the more they can hold. Good stuff though.
Thanks for the pic and the idea.

Basically it would be a wall mount on the interior wall which is the cockpit wall on the other side, next to the companionway. One issue is that it has to come out far enough to go around the handhold on the companionway next to where it would go. And then it has to bend to come up and over into the companionway opening looking up into the cockpit.
I think I can do it with the Ram-Mount arms if I go with a big enough size ball and the right arms and then a mounting plate. Don't think the plate will be the issue as all I need is a flat plate for a gimbal mount like on a radar display.
Pic to follow in a few days.

When you get unit mounted on swing arm, suggest you ty-rap/lash the cables to portion of arm that moves the least, right behind display.Avoid flexing the cable at display plugs.Plugs are the weak point.

If you have pedestal steering forum member Maine Sail has designed a very nice mounting system. Photos, instructions and can even order the parts at this link.

Only drawbacks were that when in use it was a bit on the way in the gangway (but ok as long as everyone knew to be careful), and as a homemade product it looked a bit rough (but that's a minor detail) and was not reachable to operate for the helmsman at the wheel.

Agree with you 100%. The plugs for the cables do take a lot of stress so I will have to make sure they are well support for the length from the wall/overhead to the unit that moves around. Thanks.

I have lots of respect for 15' square waves, e.g. the kind where you lay in your salon bunk with lee cloths and you go weightless and get daylight between the bunk and your backside and then get mashed down in the bunk hard right after, and repeat for hours. Thanks

You will likely have to let it "loop" loose to swing well. But do fasten it right near the connector.

Had a similar problem but purchased a new SS guard rail from Defender for $163 and very easy installation.
