Need ideas or plans for a mast horse

I need to haul a Pearson 26 on its storage trailer for about 2.0 hours. Will travel off hours and use secondary roads as much as possible but will have to access highway for some of the distance. If I google “mast horse” I don’t get very much info. If I had a decent picture I could tweek / copy a set to suit my needs. Any help greatly appreciated. Thx.

Re: Need ideas or plans for a mast horse

I have three pieces in my system:
1. mast crutch ala Stingysailor.com, attaches to gudgeons on transom.
2. homemade saddle on bow pulpit
3. old horse(?) that came with boat, missing since last spring. It has/had a bolt that slides into the same slots on the mast step as the mast would and looks like a boot jack.

Re: Need ideas or plans for a mast horse

When they transported my 40ft mast (and mizzen) it was on a purpose built trailer (not that heavily built)

The trailer was probably as long as a car trailer (20ft?), the distance from trailer to the tow hitch (8ft?) and the rest of the mast (12ft) was over the top of the car (from memory a 4WD)

The "mast horse" would have been "one size fits all" but they had padding around it. A Pearson 26ft mast should be a cinch!

Three of us managed to lift the mast off the trailer.

Our trailer was along the line of this

Here are a lot more ideas.

Re: Need ideas or plans for a mast horse

When the mast gets stepped on my Pearson 323 it gets laid on top of the pulpit and pushpit. I store the mast on the boat over Winter this way but put 2X4s in an "A" shape under the mast at the bow cleats and the stern cleats and in the center over the bulkhead between salon and vee berth.

Yes. I will conjure up an X shaped set of braces to rest the mast on and lash them to prevent movement.

Yep! My transporter had plenty of padding around the mast to protect the paint too.
