my buddy didn't winterize

hey I got a friend that has a catalina 27 with an atomic 4 (gas) he loves his boat and usually takes really good care of it. however this year he was fishing down south and did not winterize his engine. it has been a cold long winter and now he's back and starting to do some cleaning and prep work on his boat. what should he expect to be looking at for problems or is this going to be another c 27 with an outboard on the stern?

Re: my buddy didn't winterize

All depends - if it's raw water cooled and didn't get cold enough to freeze saltwater he's fine.

Kinda the same for fresh water cooled - if the exchanger didn't freeze and he was running antifreeze in the engine, he's fine.

If it got cold enough to freeze salt water, he's likely got some problems. Big problems if raw water cooled.

Obviously, look for damage/leaking coolant/leaking raw water. Then see if the A4 cranks/fires/doesn't burn water.

Re: my buddy didn't winterize

i'm guessing that its raw water cooled, and it definitely got cold enough to freeze, (for a lot of January and feb it was cold enough to walk from great island to Narragansett without using the bridge) not sure about insurance, but for arguments sake, lets just say no, i'm thinking he's gonna need a new water pump, freeze plugs, and maybe water jacket?

Your poor old Atomic bomb might be doomed. You may have a cracked head, cracked block, cracked exhaust manifold or all three . If That turns out to be the case an outboard motor is a good solution and the interior space gained is a bonus.

The burst point of seawater is only 8F lower than freshwater. By 20F you're in big trouble. Sorry. Mostly it's going to depend on drainage.
