Mounting teak handrails

Our boat is steel, built in Vancouver in 1987. Construction quality has been excellent to very good throughout.

I had some rust underneath one of the teak handrails that needed attention. When I removed the handrail I found an aluminum washer (about 5/8" OD) had been placed there at each of the mounting holes. All I can think of is that this was placed there as a spacer to prevent squeezing out all of the rubberized bedding compound that was used during original construction.

Anybody else have thoughts on why these washers were installed? And why aluminum?

Cheers!

Steve

Re: Mounting teak handrails

Believe your thinking is correct re the spacing to allow for a thicker bond, and I'm Aluminium so it would not be a rust/corrosion issue should moisture penetrate, but to me they are both flawed idea's.

With the range of modern adhesive sealants and if the teak rails are prepared correctly driving back the oil in the timber with the use of primers/accelerators designed for this then no issues,

Teak decks seldom use fasteners these days and are glued direct to the substrate with just weights to hold in place, Built a lot of steel vessels in my time but have never seen that before,
