Metal Stanchions

i have metal stantions on my boat - four of them have had the top off / uncapped for a long time i think and water is in there ! they are hollow - i keep thinking i will let them dry out and then fill them with something - but they will never dry out because i keep forgetting to cover them when it rains- it there anything i can fill them with that will stop them from rusting - them being wet - possibly very full of water ? help !

Re: metal stanchions

Drill a small hole in the bottom to let them drain? A cobalt bit, toothpick sized, and a ~30 seconds per stanchion and you're done.

Re: Metal Stanchions

I agree with Rebel Heart's plan or a consideration of what might form a drain in the stanchion base. I assume the pipes are open at the bottom an seated within a base. Most of the stanchion bases are formed with a drain hole.

Re: Metal Stanchions

I have a 35 year old boat and none of the stainless steel stanchion bases had drainage holes in them. I had to do all that myself as well as the mast pulpit.
