Re: Mast and deck colors

I like traditional styled boats. I like catboats and similar designs. I like the Eagle design.

I am an artist, and I like colorful boats.

Multiple colors on a boat can look nice.

The Eagle is a nice looking boat. Looks like fun for day sailing or weekends and because it can be trailered, I can imagine it would be nice to take many places.

Because not everyone will know that boat type, I will post a few photos, but they do not necessarily mean I would paint my own boat those colors. I would paint the topsides something other than white.

Good luck on your decision of colors.

Fair winds and happy sailing!

Countless hours of research, reading, drawing, dreaming, and painting boats (I am an artist who loves painting boats) has meant creating a pretty big collection of reference images of many boats (never enough) and a deep appreciation for boat design. I love boats! Wish I could have several (lucky you) and hope to make my dreams come true in the future too.

I am a visual guy and learner, so I like to see photos in threads like this, and post what I can if I have something to show others who may not know the boats being discussed. Hope it helps others as much as seeing others photos helps me.

My response was regarding the reference to Jackson Pollock, the renowned american abstract expressionist painter who produced a most famous painting named blue poles !

Re: Mast and deck colors

Herreshoff would have had someone else varnish the timber bits, all to be finished bright. 12 to 15 coats of the best he could find.

So, OP, finish up what you've done, and sail your boat. You can always change it in a few years if you want to. One's boats usually stay as works in progress. Never perfect long.

Hmmmmmmm..... I'm reasonably new here and don't understand why I've stopped getting an email when there is a response. I got busy during the week and didn't know until tonight I had all these kind comments.

The mast is aluminum. I will take some pics as requested. I think I'm going to paint the decks with the Bristol Beige which will be the American as the spars. Yes to the question as to whether it's a gaff or not.

Well your passion and sharing is appreciated !

And... I also had no idea that you were so enthusiastic about painting boats... Next time I have a big project I'll send you a plane ticket...

Does spraying gelcoat do anything for you???

I'll post it here for others in case somebody else needs a refresher... go to the "subscribed threads" page under quick links... check the box of the subscription you wish to modify, scroll down and at the bottom right there is our drop down list of operations... pick "instant email notification" and then press the "go" button!

Re: Mast and deck colors

my personal opinion , after having found that paint actuallly HIDES rot, is to make sure i can see the wood thru the coating placed onto it. same sprit and other spars on boat.
is one thing to have a pretty mast and boom, and totally another to have a pretty mast and boom hiding insidious ROT.
i will NEVER paint my spars again. never.

According to Nathanael G. Herreshoff:
“There are only two colors to paint a boat, black and white; and only a fool would paint a boat black.”
