The offender would have to fess up. It would be hard to prove in court.

Did your client with the damaged Martec have any protection such as an isolation transformer or galvanic isolator?

My question as well. I have an isolation transformer but will that protect me from a really bad wiring problem next door?

The offender has admitted to the problem and my understanding is his insurance has agreed to cover the damage to the the boat to his right. My client (on his left) has yet to come to an arrangement with them.

This will give you an idea of how much metal has actually been lost:

Wow! That's one small reason why I don't like tieing up in marinas.

Gone, of course. I doubt a single shaft zinc (had it even been there when this occurred, which is unknown) would have provided much protection against this kind of attack.

Do you get second thoughts diving in these marinas?

No. I have been doing this work for over 18 years. During that time, well over 1,000,000 in-water service events have taken place in the Bay Area without a single death or serious injury. I'd say that makes a fairly strong case for the relative safety of diving in saltwater marinas.

That being said, I unplug every boat I work on.

Seems VERY logical..... Sometimes the simplest little step can be our best insurance. Repetition breeds sloppiness, it's human nature. Sure sucks being human sometimes...., but as the saying goes, it beats the alternative!
