Manson Supreme Mounting Project...

Hi all! Thought I would post these quick pics in case anyone is going through the same project we currently are. Here's a few pics of the redesign of our anchor rollers / mounts out on the end of our bowsprit / pulpit. We wanted a safe and secure mount and roller for our new Manson Supreme anchor, and couldn't quite find anything out there that I thought would work for our specific application. Ended up making cardboard patterns, a cardboard model, and finally drew the sides and bottom plates for each assembly in a CAD program. Took the CAD files to my local metal shop on a thumb drive and they cut the 1/4" SS with their water jet machine in no time. Even the holes were absolutely perfect! Had it all welded together and I am now doing a final fitting before the whole 'sprit goes to the welder for assembly and a few additions. This new tech stuff is amazing! I work with a very high tech 3d modeling CAD program at work (Solidworks 2008) and have about 5000-6000 hours using it and I can appreciate that technology. I've had many projects start on the computer, move to the thumb drive and then pass waterjet and hit the welding bench only to become a perfect work of art.
Nice job on all that stuff. It looks like somthing I'd do.

Beautifull stuff that stainless steel and a proper TIG weld.

Hey James! Manson on one side, nothing mounted on other. Extra rode ready in hawsepipe, 44# Bruce and big Fortress at the ready in aft lazarette. I haven't tried the Manson and the Bruce together, but I wouldn't normally keep all that weight up there...Thanks for the nice compliments guys! Means a lot coming from you both. I've seen Jame's work. Absolutely FIRST CLASS!

Really nice work Chris,
My only comment would be that I mounted the same Windline roller on Bluestocking's stemhead fitting with about the same unsupported length that you have, and was quite surprised when it twisted down and outboard from the boat shearing off, on a chain mooring, in a hard blow.
I was able to straighten it in the press, and welded 1/4" plate to double up the ears thickness.
If your roller axles line up, I would be inclined to put a continuous axle thru both rollers, with a thick wall spacer between them.

That's good info Blue Stocking! Now the sides of my stainless roller mounts are thicker than the stock Windline at 1/4", but I really like your one piece axle idea! That would allow the far side plate to help reinforce the whole assembly. Sweet!

Yeah It certainly looks good, my only thought is a capture pin or bolt to stop the chain jumping out of the mount, though maybe I am speaking too soon.

Hey James! No new pics yet, as I thought long and hard about what Blue Stocking said ( "If your roller axles line up, I would be inclined to put a continuous axle thru both rollers, with a thick wall spacer between them." ), and took his advice. Originally I was using 1/2" bolts as roller axles, but decided to use one continuous piece of 316 rod to pass through both roller assemblies. I had no way of threading the ends of that stuff, so I took the rod to a machinist who claimed he could do it on the lathe "In a day or two..." . Two weeks later and I still don't have the part back yet. As usual, anything I rely on outside help for takes forever. Tell me you haven't been THERE before?

I'm about to go through a very similar thing except with a Rocna 25kg.
What size is your Supreme?
I looked at the spec's for your boat (nice boat by the way) ANACAPA 42 (CHALLENGER) Sailboat details on sailboatdata.com (units English) and it is similar to mine. CORBIN 39 Sailboat details on sailboatdata.com (units English) It's funny, the picture does not show the Bowsprit but the diagram does. Anyway mine indeed has a bowsprit (looks to extend about the same as yours).
I'm actually going to try to bring the anchor up inside to bowsprit in an effort to keep as much weight/force as close to the forepeak and off the end of the bowsprite. I don't think it will look near as nice as your though. Also going to try to get it closer to the center line then it is right now to minimize twist.
I've been wondering if I should start with a pre-manufactured bow roller of some sort. Likely would make it easier.

Ours is a 45. You have two choices here, the 45 or the 60. We spoke with several reps and owners before we went with the 45. We DO have heavier storm anchors aboard though...

BTW, nice boat! Nice hull shape, nice lines...I'm sure a better sailing boat then ours. Let me know if I can help you with your project. We bought our rollers (windline 40s, if I remember) off eBay, and had the welding done locally. My machinist swears my threaded roller shaft will be done today. we'll see...

If my assumption that you are talking pounds is correct, then I should be okay with my 55 pound Rocna? I'll probably second guess my size decision forever .
Actually I fell in love with the lines of the Corbin. Kind of looks like Aladdin's Slipper.
I'll also be using a Local Welder (has done good work for me so far).
So far as your Machinist goes, I'd be Very bothered. When I have some momentum going while doing a "project" it kills me when something slows me down!

I think you nailed it on Rocna size. 55lbs. sounds perfect!
