Makrolon for dodger windows?

We are getting ready to recover the dodger and bimini on our Caliber 47, and are looking hard at Makrolon AR or Makrolon uv to replace the dodger windows. We would probably use Strataglass for the connector piece to the bimini. We've seen Makrolon on an Island Packet, and loved the clarity. However, it's not recommended for installation at a slant or curve, which it would have. The Island Packet had both, and it looks great 2 years later. Has anyone had any recent experience with it? The only thread I could find is several years old. We are taking the boat to the Caribbean this fall, and I don't want something we'll need to replace in a couple of years. Any recommendations for any kind of window with excellent clarity are welcome! Here's a picture of the dodger:

Re: Makrolon for dodger windows?

This is our Makrolon windows after 8-1/2 yrs in the tropics, rarely covered. The side windows were replaced a couple years ago and you can see the difference. Makrolon will curve in one direction but not two, hence the two different plastics. Best thing you can do is get the best thread possible!

Good luck with your projectClick image for larger version

Re: Makrolon for dodger windows?

Thanks! Are the side windows made of something different? The newer Makrolon will bend in both directions horizontally and vertically - we saw it demonstrated at the canvas shop. Are your windows straight vertically, or do they slant? Ours will not be straight up and down, but at a slight slant, which they don't give a warranty for.

Yes, slanted and curved. Side panels are regular izing (sp?) glass. No way Makrolon would bend over the frames. Maybe they make it more plyable now.

Re: Makrolon for dodger windows?

The forward three panels of our bridge enclosure are Makrolon, I think 4 years old, pretty much look like new.

The two outboard panels curve around the side. The center panel can be unzipped on three sides and "pinned" to our hardtop (and there's probably some way to do with with a bimini frame).

Actually, that front panel is zipped in on all 4 sides, but we rarely unzip the top to completely remove it. And actually, the two outboard panels are also zipped on all 4 sides, removed, stored, cleaned, whatever. All structural zippers are reinforced with an overlap of hook-and-eye (e.g., Velcro), too.

Consider Tenara (Gore) thread, or equivalent.
