Major osmosis or stupidity?

Hey everyone,
Started a bottom overhaul thinking just new bottom paint. Hit a few minor blisters and said ok doing new barrier coats and bottom paint. Getting just past the barrier coat and hitting a ton of these….light blue soft spots equivalent to semi cured bondo. Did a few test areas and they are all over the place. This is on a Pacific Seacraft Flicka btw. Big time delamination/osmosis? Being stupid and going too far with the sanding(ignorance is bliss). Thoughts?

Re: Major osmosis or stupidity?

Interesting. Shouldn't be anything soft under the gelcoat. Pacific Seacraft is known for very good layups. Do you know if there was any major repairs or if it's the same on both sides?

Re: Major osmosis or stupidity?

She’s from 1978 so early-ish in production. Yes, fairly similar on both sides although the port seems to have more.

Rdarfler I bet you it is Bondo that has gone soft with constant immersion. I reckon you will have to remove them all and use epoxy filler.
In Australia our cheap filler is pink and it's not uncommon to find a few dodgy marine repairs using it.
Cheers

I agree with above post of Fore/Aft.
Are there any glass fibres in those holes? If not, it is a repair done with a polystyrene based filler, ie Bondo, in Oz know as "car bog". Such products slowly absorb water over time.

With so many 'filled holes' it looks like a previous blister repair job, a failed attempt. Does not look a repair of an incident/collision etc.

Grind each of that bog out carefully, not to take any more good fibreglass out than needed. You can all fill it with a good epoxy fairing compound, although I would fill larger holes with proper thickened epoxy and leave that just below the level of the hull, as this stuff is hard to sand. And then before the epoxy is cured, apply an epoxy fairing compound, let that harden for a day before sanding back.

I suspect the previous contributors are correct - a failed repair.
However:
Did any liquid drain or seep out of the soft spots?
If so, did it have any detectable odour [say vinegar]?
